    Name: Laura Aspen
    Content Area: Secondary Education
    Specialization Area: English
    Three Qualities:
Observant - I have a knack for noticing details about a person, environment, situation, or what have you and keeping those details in mind when interacting with the person, environment, situation, etc. I hope to further develop this quality in my career as a teacher in order to better understand and interact with my students; if something is not quite right with a student on a particular day, I hope I can pick up on the difference and intervene as appropriate.
Approachable - For some reason, I'm usually the person others will stop on the street to ask for directions, the time, an opinion on something they are about to buy, etc. I've also noticed that people tend to confide in me quickly and easily, whether I've known them for ten minutes or my whole life--it can be a blessing and a curse! I hope to further develop this quality in my career as a teacher so students and fellow school employees alike will feel comfortable coming to me to ask a question, seek help, or even just seek a listening ear.
Fun - I cannot go through a day without making a joke or saying something in character (weird voices, gestures, facial expressions--the works). Of course fun has its appropriate time and place, but so does being serious! It's not necessary to be serious all the time or even a majority of it if you ask me. I hope to keep this urge for fun in my future classroom to make lessons exciting and engaging for my students.
Opportunities/Challenges of Technology Use in the Classroom:
Opportunities - As technology becomes more prevalent and necessary in our daily lives, I feel that it should be incorporated into as many activities as possible and as appropriate. I'm sure all of my future students will have a cell phone or some other kind of technological device they will be itching to pay attention to in class--why try to work against that attention magnet by banning it from sight instead of using it to my advantage and incorporating it into my lessons?
Challenges - Since I am not the best at learning how to use technological devices and how to troubleshoot them if something goes wrong, I fear that if something were to go wrong during my technology-incorporated lesson it might take me a while to fix the issue, which may cost me the attention of my students as well as some of my credibility in their eyes.
What I Hope to Learn: I am not the most tech-savvy person, so I hope to not only learn about the kinds of technology that may be available and useful for me in the classroom, but also gain some pointers on how to use them successfully.

I feel somewhat privileged to have had the opportunity to teach College Composition for the last few years before coming to William and Mary. It was the most challenging and rewarding experience I've had, and I am looking forward to getting back into the classroom this semester.

    Key Qualities:
Empathy- While I want my students to respect me and view me as an authoritative figure, I also want to create a comfortable environment for them to share their own problems/accomplishments/feelings/etc. Understanding my students will only help me become more in tune with their personal contexts as well as the context within the classroom- how they interact with other students and how they learn. Recognizing that teenagers are more than mere faces you see once a day for less than an hour, I think, makes the process much more rewarding and personal.

    ...
Technology is not exactly my forte, but I can see it's advantages and disadvantages. As a math teacher, we'll be utilizing different types of calculators at the very least. In addition, more and more programs for math learning are being developed that allow for students to manipulate variables, equations, you name it, and very easily and quickly see how things change in these scenarios. Examples like this done by hand would take a long time, and not everyone would always get the same answer because of approximations. Technology can be a valuable asset in the math classroom. However, I strongly believe there to be a sever decline in the abilities of students to perform math on their own, whether it's mental or by hand. I would like to see my students learn and strengthen their ability to solve problems without the use of technology that just spits out the answer for them.
In this class I hope to learn about various technological tools to be able to learn them myself and perhaps use them in my classroom. I also hope to learn more about effective ways of using different tools because as it stands right now, I tend to shy away from technology. I don't want my students to miss out on opportunities simply because I cannot break out of my own technological shell.
